Clean & Prep

    Clean Line - Removal of all engine residue and surface contaminants to properly perform FPI, visual/dimensional inspection, contaminant free welding and stress relieving, and material handling.
    Blast - The blast process uses various media to “blast clean” the part using air. Abrasive particles are projected by air pressure through a nozzle onto a surface for the purpose of cleaning or preparation for thermal spray, paint or other coatings.
    Waterjet - Waterjet cleaning uses a stream of supersonic water at pressures between 30,000 to 60,000 PSI to quickly remove difficult coatings and debris.

    Dimensional Restoration

    Plasma - Thermal spray applies a tightly bonded coating by spraying molten or semi-molten metallic or non-metallic particles. The "feedstock" (coating precursor) is heated by electrical (plasma or arc) or chemical means (combustion flame). The bonded coating is usually machined to a finish size for assembly.
    Plating - Electroplating is the process of depositing an adherent metallic coating upon a metal or plastic surface by applying electrical current through a solution containing the metal to be deposited.
    Weld - CRT uses a number of welding processes to repair cracks, to build up worn material, or to attach new sections to parts. TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding is usually done by hand and requires an artist’s touch. We also have highly accurate robotic TIG welding. For flange replacements, we use Electron Beam (EB) welding which is performed robotically in a vacuum chamber. Our welders also braze tubing.


    Machine - We use a variety of machining methods including turning, milling, and grinding to achieve proper geometry on components. After adding material by welding, thermal spray coating, or plating, we machine parts to their original dimensions.
    Bench - Our Repair Technicians are responsible for performing all those operations that require disassembly, assembly, basic inspection and a "personal touch." A personal touch would be best described as grinding, blending, sanding, drilling, brushing, or inserting helixes and pins, attaching pads and aesthetic touch-up.

    Surface Treatment

    Shot Peen - Shot peening is a cold working process used to produce a compressive residual stress layer and modify mechanical properties of metals to increase fatigue life. It entails impacting a surface with shot (round metallic or glass bead particles) with force sufficient to create plastic deformation. It is similar to sandblasting, except that it operates by the mechanism of plasticity rather than abrasion: each particle functions as a ball-peen hammer.
    Paint - The primary purpose of applying paint to the component is to protect the surface from corrosion. We apply protective coatings with a spray gun using compressed dry air (CDA) in a ventilated paint booth. We also apply anti-gall coatings on threads and splines to prevent damage from mating parts.
    Heat Treat - Vacuum furnaces are used to stress relieve, solution, and age our parts, to achieve desired metallurgical properties, usually after welding. We also have numerous air ovens and local stress units.

    Testing and Inspection

    FPI - Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI) is a type of dye penetrant inspection in which a fluorescent dye is applied to the surface of a non-porous material in order to detect defects that may compromise the integrity or quality of the part.
    Inspection - Much of the inspection of components in a Repair Station is visual inspection for service-related wear, hidden damage, and handling damage. We also perform extensive dimensional inspections to determine wear and distortion that is both service induced and occurs in the course of repairs.
    X-Ray - CRT has many Non-Destructive Inspection methods (NDI), including X-Ray. In X-Ray inspection, electromagnetic waves pass through a part and activate film. A skilled film reader can find cracks and other defects in the image this creates due to changes in part density.
    Lab - The laboratory provides quality control for shop processing applications in Thermal Spray, Chemical Cleaning, Plating, Weld, Shotpeen and other departments as needed.
